New Years Day. Zero. Too cold to go to Sunday school. Papa didn’t come out as he was nursing frozen pipes

My grandmother, Ruth Campbell Smith (1892 - 1972) kept a diary for many years. I am posting her entries from 1925 - 1927 in this blog. Her family included sons Dale (1916 - 2004), Dick (1918 - 1971), Albert (1920 - 1979), and Ned (1923 - 1976), and later daughters Marjorie (1925 - 2010) and Eleanor (1929 - 2011). Her husband was Gilbert (1889 - 1937) and they lived in Indianapolis. I hope you enjoy this glimpse of what it was like to be a housewife and mother in the 1920's.
Hi Carol,
ReplyDeleteOn Twitter you said this is the last entry in the diary - how sad that we have to leave Ruth shivering in zero degree weather!
Thanks for sharing them with us; I'm keeping my fingers crossed that journals from other years will turn up.
And many thanks to Eleanor & Marjorie for sharing their remarkable mother.

Thanks for posting these - really enjoyed reading them!
ReplyDeletePLEASE call your cousins or whomever might have more of the diaries and beg them that you may borrow them to make a copy. Ruth's has many followers and supporters for her warm motherly writings that inspire us each day. Will miss her terriably.

woops sorry for the terrible misspelling of terribly
ReplyDeleteYes! Thanks for sharing all these journal entries! We're all going to miss them very much!
ReplyDeleteHere's a book that I just bought on Amazon.com that anyone reading this blog should be interested in....
The Red Leather Diary: Reclaiming a Life through the Pages of a Lost Journal by Lily Koppel
A reporter finds a diary from the 1929-1934 tucked away in an old trunk.
Good luck finding more of your Grandmother's diaries!
Carol...how could you leave us hanging like this? You should at least post a summary "of the rest of the story".....
ReplyDeleteI've been reading these journal entries everyday now for just about 2 years. I have really enjoyed the glimpse of daily life in the 1920's.
ReplyDeleteI would also love to have one more post that wraps things up a little bit on what happened to the family in the following years.
Thank you for sharing your grandma with us.
Thank you so much for this wonderful opportunity to reach across time and share another person's life. I just discovered these entries and find it hard to tear myself away from them even when I should be working. Please update us on how Grandma survived when Gilbert died. These people are the ages of my own grandmothers and Albert is about my father's age so I can really relate. Thanks so much!

I'm a late comer to these posts of your grandmother's diary. I want to add my thanks to that of others for including them as well as the wonderful addition of Marjorie's and Eleanor's comments.
