Ruth Campbell Smith 1925-27 Diaries

My grandmother, Ruth Campbell Smith (1892 - 1972) kept a diary for many years. I am posting her entries from 1925 - 1927 in this blog. Her family included sons Dale (1916 - 2004), Dick (1918 - 1971), Albert (1920 - 1979), and Ned (1923 - 1976), and later daughters Marjorie (1925 - 2010) and Eleanor (1929 - 2011). Her husband was Gilbert (1889 - 1937) and they lived in Indianapolis. I hope you enjoy this glimpse of what it was like to be a housewife and mother in the 1920's.

Fair & Melting

If I could just get out a little I would feel better, but I don’t have a decent coat and hat this winter and see little chance of getting any soon although there are sales now, but I won’t run Gilbert in debt again.

There was the post on last year's entry about Dale returning and paying off his mother's debts. Did she have a spending problem? How did she manage such a large family?

dk... I don't think Grandma had a spending problem, I think Gilbert didn't make a lot of money as a accountant for the gas company... they had a house and once Marjorie was born, 5 kids, later 6 kids. She managed by making their clothes, I think. She was widowed in 1937 and never remarried, so my impression is that money was always tight.
