Did a big day’s work, cleaning. Made two cakes, then dressed and went down town and picked around at the new spring dress goods. Got Dale a pair of pants he paid for himself and the whole gang some stockings.
(I suppose "picked around" means she didn't actually buy any 'spring dress goods' to make herself a new dress.)
