Gilbert thought he had washing machine just about fixed as he had bought a new motor, but somehow it won’t go so we have to send for a service man after all.

My grandmother, Ruth Campbell Smith (1892 - 1972) kept a diary for many years. I am posting her entries from 1925 - 1927 in this blog. Her family included sons Dale (1916 - 2004), Dick (1918 - 1971), Albert (1920 - 1979), and Ned (1923 - 1976), and later daughters Marjorie (1925 - 2010) and Eleanor (1929 - 2011). Her husband was Gilbert (1889 - 1937) and they lived in Indianapolis. I hope you enjoy this glimpse of what it was like to be a housewife and mother in the 1920's.

I wonder how much a service man cost back then? In this 'throw away world' sometimes it's cheaper to just buy new.
ReplyDeleteThe motor on our 17 year old washing machine went out a few months ago. I could not replace the washer we have for less than $1200 if I wanted all of the same features (and I do), so I paid $300 to have a new motor put in. And the washing machine is running as I type. The repair man said our machine was in such good condition that it made sense to get it fixed.
