Ruth Campbell Smith 1925-27 Diaries

My grandmother, Ruth Campbell Smith (1892 - 1972) kept a diary for many years. I am posting her entries from 1925 - 1927 in this blog. Her family included sons Dale (1916 - 2004), Dick (1918 - 1971), Albert (1920 - 1979), and Ned (1923 - 1976), and later daughters Marjorie (1925 - 2010) and Eleanor (1929 - 2011). Her husband was Gilbert (1889 - 1937) and they lived in Indianapolis. I hope you enjoy this glimpse of what it was like to be a housewife and mother in the 1920's.

Slightly warmer

Phil Miller broke down my clothes line pole so Bradbury came to fix it, but left to order three posts and didn’t come back. His phone is disconnected so couldn’t call him. Dale had to go after him in first place. Have a lot of work for him to do.

(Bradbury must have been the local handyman. Aunt Marjorie wrote that she heard a lot about the Miller's next door, but doesn't remember them. They must have moved away when she was fairly young. Grandma wrote about them a few other times in her diary, she didn't seem to care for them as playmates for her kids.)

Seems like every neighborhood has one family with annoying kids. That sounds mean-but it is true. Breaking down the clothesline had to be a major calamity for her.

A family of Millers whose children bear the same first names as the children mentioned in the diaries [sons Phillip, Richard, Robert and daughter Frances, with a son Willison which could have been shortened to Bill] were living on another street in Indianapolis when the 1930 Census was taken. It seems quite likely that this is the right family. Phillip Miller was only 7 years old in April 1930 - he must have been a strong 4-year old to have taken down that pole in 1927!
