Fair – cool

Too discouraged to try to go to Sunday School. Got my work done up and we took dinner at Mama’s. I realize my only hope of having anything beyond the bare necessities, lies in my children and by the time they could help me they will to want to buy for some other woman.

(Though Mom says that Grandma never shared much about her financial situation later in life, we believe that her sons did help provide for her later in life.)

  1. I understand when Dale was in the navy his allotment check went to Mother. When he married Ruth she wanted the allotment to still go to mother as she could earn enough while he was in the navy. Dale also bought mother a new couch, etc, & later when he lived in Calif. he always paid her plane fare for visits. So he did help his mother, even tho he was married.

Dick married Carrie, who's mother was also poor. She gave her mother money & Dick gave mother money, whatever they could afford as they were'nt rich themselves.

Being in priesthood training Albert probably had the least amount of money as any of them, although I know he would give you his last dime. Money or possessions weren't important to him.

When Ned was is the airforce his allotment probably went to mother

  2. Makes me more thankful for how easy I have it-compared to her having to wait on her children to be grown.

  3. Have to wonder how they fared during the depression, especially after Gilbert died. Of course, I remember my parents saying that if one had a job, any kind of job, during the depression, they did fine. The problem was for those w/o a job as there was no government aid during that time.
