Windy

My how the days fly! Got my ironing done by noon and had planned to make a house dress this PM and possibly cut out some things but Mama came and I cut out a pattern off of hers and didn’t even get my dishes done till time to get supper. Had planned to take Dale to the church prayer meetings, but saw I wouldn’t get ready in time. Then I thought I would put in the evening sewing and get something made yet and Marjorie took a spell crying so hard that I haven’t done a thing but walk the floor with her. Don’t know what is the matter with her. This is the second spell this week.

(Another day with a lot of sewing, or attempts to do some sewing. In othe diary entries, Grandma has written that she didn't get much done when her mother came to visit, because her mother talked all the time, and because she could not hear well out of one ear, she had to strain to listen.

  1. She always complained that when her mama came over she never got things done. I remember her mama (my grandmother) would come and sit in the little rocker (she was a small woman) and she always had horehound drops she would give us kids. I haven't had any horehound candy since she died & I don't remember what they tasted like, but they were definately different tasting. I guess I could go buy some & see if they bring back any memories

  2. It sounds like between her toe and the baby she had a tough month. Iron, mend, sew, clean, start again. No wonder she sounds down more often than up. "I cut out a pattern off of hers" not many of us could do this anymore. I have the impression that she did all of her sewing by hand - did she have a machine? I couldn't finish a house dress by hand in a week, let alone a day!

  3. Yes, grandma had a sewing machine, fortunately. It was probably a Singer!

  4. Most likely a treadle or a hand crank, Singer 66. I have one from 1927, that I sew on all the time, and it's my only machine. I'm willing to bet with all her sewing and not mentioning the kids helping it was a treadle.

Sewing on these seems counter productive to everyone used to all the bells and whistles, and electricity, but when you're sewing and someone comes in, you don't have to stop...just slow down.
