Winifred arrived from Florida. Harry is out of a job so he had to send her back. Poor kiddy, she is so lost up here. Her mother is at Attilla’s where there isn’t room for Winifred and I know the poor child is just naturally timid, the reason she is so quiet. She never had a normal life. I wish I could take her in, but of course I haven’t a room for her. I washed and ironed everything today. Too tired for anything went to bed before dark – about 7:30 I guess.
(I do not know who Attilla was, or even if that is a first name or last name. Harry and his wife Mabel seemed to have trouble providing a stable home for their daughter Winifred. You can read more about Winifred on this post.)

So, what ended up happening to Winifred? Is she still alive today?
ReplyDeleteWinifred entered the "WACS" (women's army corp) during WW2, where she met & married her husband. She became pregnant & was released by the army. But before she had twin boys, her new husband was killed in action. Bruce & Brian were raised by Winifred and her father, my Uncle Harry. She made a home for her '3 men' for the rest of her life. As an adult I remember her as being very pretty & sweet & not so shy. (well, we all grow up). Unfortunately, since they lived mostly in Florida we didn't keep in close contact. Both she and Uncle Harry died many years ago (when they were elderly). I do not know if Bruce or Brian are still alive or what their lives were like

ReplyDeleteOn the 1920 and 1930 US censuses for Indianapolis there's a woman in Indianapolis named Attilla Kingsbury enumerated with her husband John. They were at 59th & University and her maiden name was Jones - do the names ring any bells?
