Monday, February 1, 1926
Cloudy

I’ve felt miserable all day – sort throat, head ache and roars in my ears, etc. Didn’t wash as I wanted to doctor up. Made Albert another waist out of long cloth and dyed it gray.

(Aunt Marjorie wrote, "Didn't wash? Monday was always (almost) wash day!)

I'm impressed that even though Grandma did not feel well, she made Albert a shirt (waist) and then even dyed it!

  1. What I don't understand, what is "long cloth". I haven't heard that one before

  2. At least when she was sewing she could sit and "relax". It was probably as close to being idle as she could get.

I can't imagine a life without the telephones, TV, video games, radios etc. When you read these diaries it makes you realize how much distracts us throughout our day. How quiet it must have been in Ruth's day!

When Ruth was a young mother, there were virtually no electronics except telephone and a radio (which she doesn't mention so I assume they didn't have). When Eleanor, her daughter, was a young mother, there were 2 tvs in the house and 2 telephones, along with a radio or two. Now, as I raise my children (Eleanor's daughter, Ruth's granddaughter) there is a tv in every room , a telephone in every room (some rooms have 2 or more), computers everywhere (the internet and blogs just waiting to distract us), game systems.... multiple radios -- it's no wonder I can never get anything done!
