Warmer
Didn’t get my ironing done till supper time for all my good start yesterday.
(At times, Grandma's world did seem to revolve around washing and ironing clothes. Some days, ironing must have been all she did, and I think that even when she wasn't ironing, she was thinking about how she needed to get to her ironing.
What's our 21st century "ironing"? What are we constantly doing or worrying about not doing?)

My grandmother used to brag that she won an ironing contest! Can't even imagine that there ever was such an event.
ReplyDelete21st century "ironing" is probably something like answering e-mail. I doubt any of us have any household chores that rank that high!
I don't remember if she stood while ironing or sat down. Me, if I ironed all day (which I can't imagine) I would sit. I do have some friends who would iron underwear, sheets, jeans, etc, thatI wouldn't bother with. Yet I think my family looked as neat as anyone elses. It depends on how you take the clothes out of the dryer and fold them that makes the difference. I used to like to hang stuff like sheets on the clothes line to get that good fresh smell.
ReplyDeleteI think the 21st ironing chore is the transportation chore. So many activities available to kids, and they must participate in all of them, so many young moms spend a large part of their day transporting to and fro.
ReplyDeleteFood prep and cleanup is never mentioned too much in your grandmother's diary. An older friend of mine was telling me that as a child (she is now 92) they would go down to the basement and get a can of meat (they lived on a hog farm and butchered and canned their meat), a can of vegetables, and a can of fruit and bring them up for supper each night. Whatever wasn't eaten at supper would be eaten for dinner the next noontime.
