The boys got awfully industrious today. I told them what all I had to do so they pitched in and helped me. Polished the furniture for me while I cleaned the kitchen, bath, and pantry. We got the house clean and in good order. But of course I didn’t get everything done I wanted too, ironing for instance. The boys and I trimmed the tree.

(Always the ironing!

Mom always got us to help clean up the house before Christmas. It probably kept us from driving her crazy while we were waiting for the big day... Christmas!)

  1. It also kept you guys from snooping, trying to find where your gifts were hidden.

  2. Interesting that they waited to trim the tree until Dec. 23rd. When we were growing up we always put the tree up on my brother's birthday (December 11th). Then gradually the date got moved back until now it is put up over Thanksgiving weekend. I noticed that a few of the neighbors even had theirs up the weekend before Thanksgiving!

  3. Ours goes up early so it is up before the birthday party. Now that she is 18,, with no more parties, do you suppose the girls will let us put it up later? I doubt it.

  4. Christmas on the farm--we always had a cedar tree cut from some fence row. Your great grandfather chose it and when it was drug home it was usually way to tall for even the 10 foot ceiling and had to be cut off. There were two trees. One was put up on the 1st of December and then the week of Christmas it was taken down because it was already dry and a second tree was put up and left up until after the New Year. There was roping hung from corner to corner and fastened to the hanging light and had tinsel icecicles hung on it and and a wreath in each window. We would put the icecicles on the tree too and would some times throw a handful and this did not make your grandmother happy. Under the tree were candy orange slices, gum drops, and vanilla creams and oranges, apples and various nuts. The homemade candies were divinity and fudge. Wish I had a piece or each right now. Merry Christmas
