Put in my spare time mending and got all done but the stockings and they are a hopeless mess. Most of them look like they would go to the rag bag.

(Mending? I don't know when was the last time I had to mend anything, yet it was almost a daily task for Grandma to mend something. Could be just part of having 4 boys running around playing outside? And does anyone have a "rag bag" anymore, or keep a box of buttons? I know Grandma probably kept everything and anything that might be useful at some time.)

  1. Darned socks are hard on your feet, so I don't do it. But i'm always sewing up seams, gluing patches on holes (with special fabric glue made for this job) But my specialty seems to be regluing stuff together, toys, household stuff, etc. One of the grandchildren will bring a broken toy to me, confident I can fix it. The last job had a surface area the size of this dot [ . ] and of course couldn't be fixed. Thus proving grandma can't do everything

  2. I have to admit I do have a rag bag and a tin container of old buttons. I am not sure who got mom's but she had one too. A large round brown tin that once held Christmas fruitcake.

  3. As a newlywed, I bought a 'starter tin' of assorted buttons - Sears had a large sewing department in the late sixties - and it's still around, with the original buttons mostly used and others added in. I will sew separated seams, do minor alterations, take up hems, etc. but man! I hate replacing zippers.

I never darned sox, but my grandma did. As a Depression-era widow with children, she had to, but like Eleanor, my dad said the darns wrecked your feet! My sister has the wooden darning egg and our grandmother's treadle sewing machine.

  4. I have a beautiful wooden darning egg that we bought at the Feast of the Hunter's Moon several years ago. It has never been used. (Although when my handmade socks wear out, maybe I will attempt some repairs.)

  5. Being an immigrant raised by two immigrant women - we saved everything when I grew up. So, yes, I have a button tin and two rag boxes (one for old towels and one for rags of all types). I also save the rubber bands from the mail carrier, twist ties, and bakery box string. Unlike my mother and grandmother, I try to limit them to a reasonable amount I could actually use! Being frugal is an art you can teach your kids.
