Ruth Campbell Smith 1925-27 Diaries

My grandmother, Ruth Campbell Smith (1892 - 1972) kept a diary for many years. I am posting her entries from 1925 - 1927 in this blog. Her family included sons Dale (1916 - 2004), Dick (1918 - 1971), Albert (1920 - 1979), and Ned (1923 - 1976), and later daughters Marjorie (1925 - 2010) and Eleanor (1929 - 2011). Her husband was Gilbert (1889 - 1937) and they lived in Indianapolis. I hope you enjoy this glimpse of what it was like to be a housewife and mother in the 1920's.

Cool and rainy

Built another fire

(It must have been quite a bit of work to heat a house with a coal furnace. I assume that's the fire they built because they didn't have any fireplaces in the house. It must have gotten very cold for them to build another fire in the furnace.)

I turned on my heat for just a little while yesterday. But all I had to do was flip a switch. This kind of weather I'm always switching from heat to cool. Too bad they didn't have that technology back then. Life would have been a lot easier, and cleaner

May was a chancy month in the Chicago area, too - I can remember needing heavy hooded sweatshirts for some Memorial Day picnics. And then wearing sundresses the next Memorial Day weekend. You're right Eleanor - with such changeable weather, people should appreciate that technology!
