Ruth Campbell Smith 1925-27 Diaries

My grandmother, Ruth Campbell Smith (1892 - 1972) kept a diary for many years. I am posting her entries from 1925 - 1927 in this blog. Her family included sons Dale (1916 - 2004), Dick (1918 - 1971), Albert (1920 - 1979), and Ned (1923 - 1976), and later daughters Marjorie (1925 - 2010) and Eleanor (1929 - 2011). Her husband was Gilbert (1889 - 1937) and they lived in Indianapolis. I hope you enjoy this glimpse of what it was like to be a housewife and mother in the 1920's.

Rain part of time

I got Gilbert to clean the paper in the stairway so I could finish the rest. Then I put my clothes to soak expecting to get a lot of work done this week. Then of course I had to make fudge, in the absence of cocoa I made it white with nuts and raisins in it. It was good, too.

(Grandma had a sweet tooth, I think.)

Did Grandma make fudge on every holiday? I could swear that my mom taught me that it can only be made successfully at Christmas time!

You know Sherry, fudge can be made time of the year. I imagine if Ruth wanted someting sweeet she had to make it, whereas we would just go to the store & buy something. It sounds like she used the cinnamon roll recipe but put other stuff in it, instead of rolling it in cinnamon. Yummy
