Felt like I was at the end of my string today. Had to lie down most of the time. Called Papa up and told him my troubles so he said he would send a tonic out. I haven’t an ache or a pain but feel as if every step would be my last.

(I wonder what was wrong with Grandma, and what was in the tonic her father sent to her?)

  1. I wonder if common depression was considered an illness back in the 1920's. Sure sounds like that's what she has a lot of the time. And I too would like to know what the tonic was. Could have had a lot of alcohol in it. If she thought it did she would never drink it. Her papa would have known but would probably not tell her.

  2. Vitamin B tonics were big at one time, but not sure if they were aware of vitamins in the 20s. This tonic may have been like Coca Cola. She could have been low on iron, too. I'm still wondering what all they ate as she never mentions what she serves at the meals, but gives us details of washing, ironing, and mending. Those must have been Ruth's specialties, not food.
