Put in big day sewing. I wish I could put in lots of days like this. Maybe I could get something made then, but I don’t get more than a good start in a day and then can’t finish up right away so things drag. Tomorrow the washing will be home and I will have to starch and iron some of the clothes and so won’t get much sewing done I’m afraid. Albert is just desperate for clothes. I want to get his pants and several waists made this week.

(Seems like Grandma was still enjoying the "luxury" of the wet wash, sending their clothes out to be washed and then brought back wet for her to dry and, of course, iron.

"Waists" are shirts... I wonder if all families relied on the mother to sew their clothes? If I had to sew all my clothes, well, it would not be good.)

  1. If you had to sew your own clothes, you would have learned when you were little and you would be good. The horror is that you would not have time for all your gardening!!! Aren't we glad that we don't have to do all our sewing? I am.

  2. I can't think of any other mother of my friends who even sewed, let alone make all their kids clothes. I think I was about 10 when I was making my own skirts (gathered around the waist with a waist band). I can't say they were well made, but they covered me. In high school I think I was making almost all my clothes. I"ve even made formals. I quit making clothes a few years ago, & don't intend to start up again. I just make quilts & crafts, & hem my kids pants, & patch my grandkids clothes.

  3. Did her laundry come back wet? Or dry and wrinkled? If it came back wet, I wonder how she kept it from molding.

  4. OK. I just reread that -- you did say it came back wet - so, I wonder how she kept the clothes from molding?

  6. I kind of found you late...

I make all my own clothing and a good portion of my son's. A lot of it is being used to doing it daily and getting into a pattern, and I don't wear mumus, I have some seriously cute clothes.
